An Extraordinary Weekend in Rome

Wow. Holy Cow. Wow.

I think I repeated those words at least a hundred times over the weekend. Whether it was food, seaside views, or historic Roman landmarks, it was a captivating experience. But the best part was spending time with my extraordinary niece, Elaine, her equally extraordinary Scottish husband, James, and their white cat, Pinkerino (also extraordinary).

It was all too wonderful for words, thus my limited vocabulary.

Cliffs above the gorgeous blue Tyrrhenian Sea, on the way to Gaeta. A perfect day spent with James and Elaine.
The first section of the Via Appia was built in 312 BC. I’ve always wanted to walk this ancient highway. I tried to imagine how busy it must have been, bordered with all the resources that soldiers and commerce travelers would need – water, food and bedding for humans and animals, cart repairs, temples – in other words, most of the things that interstate travelers seek now. Today this section is lined with beautiful, historic villas.
Rome. Trajan’s Column, Arch of Septimius Severus, the Roman Forum. Nighttime in November provided dramatic views and fewer tourists.

Pizza. Pasta. Fresh breakfast pastries. Bread with new green olive oil that I will always remember. Laughter. Fun. Family. It was a weekend to treasure. Thank you, Elaine and James!
