Meandering Notes About New Adventures in Porto, Portugal
Street Art and Color
This amazing portrait is by Mr.Dheo, a native of Porto. His work enriches Porto streets all around the city as well as major urban locations around the world. On this gigantic wall he painted his father, holding a can of paint in one hand and the Clérigos Tower, symbolizing Porto, in the other. Enveloping the building, a mist of paint. “I wanted to pay tribute to an excellent father, an excellent grandfather and an excellent man, who motivated me to do this fifteen years ago.” (Source publico.pt)This vibrant art along Avenue dom Afonso Henriques conceals major construction to expand the Porto Metro train. Why is this bird wearing a sweater? He seems proud of it.
Color Everywhere
It’s my first March in Porto, and it’s a joy to see the rhododendrons, tulips, and assorted magnolia species in full bloom. The local McDonalds, with its chandeliers and stained glass (below) gets great credit for building a store that complements Porto history and architecture, but I think the Steak ‘n Shake tile wall deserves applause as well.Colorful view through the windows at the Mesa 325 coffee house, another great place for coffee and Wifi.Strolling past the monument to King Dom Pedro V, I noticed he appeared be adding some refined punk style to his look. Turns out he’s been adorned with spikes to keep the pigeons and seagulls from roosting atop his pate.
