The Beach at Buarcos

It was a beautiful week and I repeatedly found myself asking how I got so lucky and blessed to be experiencing it.

My Airbnb is in Buarcos, a civil parish in the Figueira da Foz Municipality, according to Wikipedia. As best I can tell, Buarcos was a small fishing village and Figueira da Foz has grown to envelop it. What was once a row of canneries is now beachfront hotels and restaurants.

Buarcos, Portugal
A bit of the beach, Buarcos in the background.

Here’s a minute of beach zen for you.

The ubiquitous black and white sidewalk tiles incorporate crabs, fish, and other sea-related motifs as well as geometric designs like those below.

This is such a clean beach. I understand it is part of an international program to commit to specific, sustainable environmental criteria. The sculpture offers a gently cheeky reminder of our responsibilities, while making it easy to dispose of plastic bottles.

The dark foreground is the beach sand and the ocean was behind me.
How many hideaways does Fernando have, I wonder? This one stays busy, day and night. I like this shot because it feels a bit like Edward Hopper’s work.
Sunbathing, Mamie-Style
Spray yourself with #60 sunscreen. Pick your spot and spread your beach towel with care, so as to pretend the sand will never invade between you and the towel. Lie down. Wiggle yourself into the sand to achieve the perfect sculptural support for maximum comfort. Cover your face to block the intense light from your eyes. Be amazed that 8 minutes ago the sun emitted these energy particles that gently warm and even cook you. Enjoy for three minutes. Decide you are bored, get up and go play tag with the waves.
